fascinating

It amazes me when discoveries are made in modern times that seem like they should have already been discovered. Check out this story of a never before seen tribe of the Amazon (be sure to check out the photo slide-show in the side bar). It's a scene right out of Planet of the Apes! Good thing Charlton Heston is no longer with us, he might be mounting a search and destroy mission with his NRA buddies to go and eradicate these pygmies.

Water re-visited

I made this post just over a year ago pertaining to the potential (likely?) global water crisis.
Here's an article addressing this issue and how GE has been investing in the infrastructure to deal with this problem.
Here's another article discussing the topic of "Peak Water." Interesting stuff.
Currently PHO (PowerShares Water Resource ETF) is approaching resistance (around $22.50) at it's 52-week high and up 22% since this time last year.

GE

Time to buy GE? The stochastic is way oversold, the stock hasn't seen this price level since '04, and the past two days produced a tweezer bottom formation.

TTEK

Basing around $25.70 TTEK (Waste Management Services) is flirting with multi-year highs. It has strong resistance ('04 highs) to contend with, so it will need some momentum to push through here, but it looks determined.

Short?

Here's a chart of the S&P500 index on a monthly basis. Since the lows to highs (10/31/02 - 10/31/07) we have retraced 38.2%. The current retracement since march has happened on much lighter volume. Time to load up on puts in the SPY?

"People don't assign the correct weights to information, and they assign too much weight to information, especially if they have collected it themselves." Due to the information glut available to everyone who trades, it is nearly impossible to view all incoming information in the "correct context," especially considering the short-term focus that seems to be pervasive today. As a result, information can be used to make just about any point, or justify any position one wishes to make."

The U.S. Dollar Index took a slide today (why is the price of oil so high??).

What I learned today...

....I do NOT want to swing trade!! In an attempt at self-sabotage I put in orders for a number of stocks yesterday evening as swing positions. Near the end of the close this afternoon I am out of half of them. I wasn't stopped out of these trades, just took myself out due to today's schizo sell-off. The market behavior just took away any confidence I had in those positions to hold them over night.
My aspirations are to DAY TRADE with consistency. And so, from this point on that is what I will do. Lesson learned.

CRR Cup

CRR (Energy, Oil & Gas Operations); Over the past 6 months it traced out a rounded bottom/cup w. handle pattern. More recently the 50EMA crossed above its 200EMA. Buying a break of $50 with a stop around $46.50-$47 a target should be around $65.

For Monday

FWLT (Cap. Goods, Construction Services); it either ran as far as it can (nearly touching $80) and will see some consolidation, or we can get a push to $85 with support at $80.CRZO (Energy, Oil & Gas Operations); got a huge rush of momentum last week. It's currently basing around $74.75.FTI (Energy, Oil Well Services & Equipment); Looking for a base break above $79.25.CWEI (Energy, Oil & Gas Operations); This looks like a stock that has gone too far too fast. Huge momentum has given this stock a 44% gain in the past two months. Though it looks over-extended it is basing around $78.

iWannaBe's

The HTC Diamond looks like a pretty respectable competitor to the iphone. Manufactured by High Tech Computer Corp. out of Taiwan. I don't know if/where these are available in the U.S. or how much they run, but they look pretty decent.

Oil v. Gold

Is Oil about to roll over, or primed to go higher? Check out the chart for the price of oil (in blue, as represented by the USO ETF) compared to that of gold (in yellow, as represented by the GLD ETF). Gold sure fell out of favor quickly, ending a tight price correlation that has held strong for a while there.

COV

COV basing around $49.50 and could have a move higher. The past 3 tests of the 20-day EMA moved price higher and today saw a quick test of that 20EMA. Price finished strong considering today's late day sell-off. Volume was up big too.Other basing stocks I'm checking out are:

More for Monday

RIMM basing around $133, seems like it's waiting for a bullish Nasdaq day before it tests out the $136 range. JOYG basing around $79.30 after breaking a $72 base.HAL; making a second attempt above $48.10

Friday, May 09, 2008

For Monday

FWLT is on my watchlist for Monday. A re-test of the $68 level within a rising wedge-like pattern.
DRYS; a cup pattern now basing around $93.

What a Move

TLM closed at an all-time high today. Pretty impressive being that it was near a 52-week low about 6 weeks ago. It is an Energy stock though, so, come on.

Base Break

CE is basing around $46. A break above could bring some momentum.

Down Day

A strong sell-off in the afternoon for the indexes today. The DJIA did a little bounce off the 200EMA. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq100 are now mid-way between the 100 & 200 EMA's. A nervous sell-off, but things are still holding positive. Things can certainly go either way (my opinion is up from here).

iwantone

Is a price cut in store for the iphone with the intro of the next generation model? They did it with the ipod; cut the price nearly in half after releasing a few generations and working out the kinks. Before you know it, everyone and their grandmother will own an iphone.

Any Day Now

Basing around $21 (perhaps due to Q1 earnings to be released on Tuesday?), PQ looks primed to move higher.

MA

Huge momentum added up to over 13% on MA's share price within three days this past week. We were left with dark cloud cover on Friday's close. It seems there's value in a simple business objective. As one article puts it; "They just collect transaction tolls on the exponentially growing global money highway."
Since these candlestick patterns are regarded as a higher probability tops, we might expect some downside to come in to play this week. Or even a large portion of sideways chop to work itself out.

Mixed Signals

GS ended last week with a hanging man candlestick with potential tomorrow for an evening star reversal pattern. Though momentum is positive, we could see a support test of previous resistance at the $184 level.

Potential Long

Broken base with positive momentum on DRYS looks like it could make a run. The next level of resistance is the $100 mark.
